 Welcome to Summer Rocks 2011 at Emmanuel Lutheran School!
This year we will be offering camps for students in Preschool through rising 12th grade. In our program your child can explore a wide variety of areas. Please read the program listings carefully to find out more about each camp.
All programs are held Monday through Friday. A snack is served each day, and a hot lunch is provided for students attending over the noon hour. Please note that there is no camp on Monday, July 4th.
The Little Tikes Program, for Infant thru rising Kindergarten, is predominantly a full day program. Our Explorers Program, for rising 1st thru 9th grade students, offers a choice of half day or full day, with lots of flexible options. Arts and crafts, swimming, and other fun activities round out the afternoon for our full-day campers. Emmanuel Under the Lights, for rising 6th thru 12th grade, is a partial-day camp. Please read carefully to determine camp hours. It all culminates with a fantastic drama camp performance.
Space is limited, so don’t delay! Please note that a non-refundable $50.00 registration fee and four signatures are required for the application to be complete and to reserve your child’s spot. This fee is applied to the cost of the camps. Also, please feel free to call us at 281-8182 with any questions you may have about any of our programs.

Please read all registration information carefully
before completing the Summer Programs Application.
Registration will begin on February 1, 2011.
A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate and a recent copy of their immunization records must accompany applications for new students.
One application must be completed for each participant.
Financial Obligations
• A non-refundable $50.00 registration fee and four signatures are required for the application to be complete. This fee is subsequently applied to the cost of the camps. The balance of the Camp Fee is due one week prior to the beginning of the camp session.
• Payment must be made in the form of cash or check. Current Tuition Express (TE) families need to contact Mrs. Cookie
(281-8182) if they want to continue with TE for the Summer.
• A 10% discount is extended to the camp fees of siblings. Inquire about details and limitations.
• No tuition-free days are allowed (i.e. sick days, vacation days, etc.).
• If a camp is cancelled due to low interest, a refund will be issued.
• Once you sign up for a camp and you want to drop or switch to another camp, you must present a written request to the main office two weeks in advance. Failure to provide written request at least two weeks in advance will result in required payment due for the full amount.
• Field Trips are subject to change based on availability.

Little Tikes
For Infants to rising Kindergarten
Nine 1-week sessions, June 13 - August 12
Infants (ages 6 weeks-12 months) 7:30-5:30 $199/wk
Toddlers (ages 12 – 24 months) 7:30-5:30 $189/wk
Preschool (ages 2 – 5) 8:30-3:15 $128/wk
Preschool (ages 2 - 5) 7:30-5:30 $180/wk
Note: A snack and hot lunch are included. Due to the July 4th holiday, Session 4 will be prorated (80%) to offset the shorter week.
Little Tikes are placed in classes that are age-appropriate and fun, but most importantly, comfortable for the young child. Our experienced early childhood educators really love children. Each day offers arts, crafts, songs and movement, story time, and loads of fun. Special instructors will bring even more excitement and learning to a terrific summer. As this program is nearly always at capacity, be sure to check for availability as early as possible.
The Explorers
For rising 1st to 9th Graders
Nine 1-week sessions June 13 - August 12
We offer two camp choices each week. You can also choose to attend for half day only, or stay all day. Because you only pay for the weeks you attend, this setup is very parent-friendly.
You can choose to attend Camp only. The hours for the camps are 9:00-12:00 unless otherwise stated. For those needing to drop off their children earlier, we offer care from 7:30-9:00 at no additional charge. For children in camp & extended day (7:30-5:30), snacks and hot lunches are included. In the afternoons, the children will be bussed to swimming, and have arts, crafts, and extended learning activities.

Vaction Bible School

Grab your surf board and paddle out to ride a wave of fun and adventure at SonSurf Beach Blast. Learn about cool creatures like clownfish, dolphins and sea turtles. As children explore the wonders of the beach they will get big answers to their big questions about Jesus. Who is Jesus? Why do I need Jesus? How can Jesus help me when I mess up? What does Jesus want me to do? Bring your child to SonSurf Beach Blast and introduce them to Jesus Our Savior. It’s the best week you will ever spend at the beach!
June 20 - June 24
On Broadway
Cost: $85.00
Cost with extended day: $185.00
Students will learn and perform some of Broadways best songs and scenes, chosen with children in mind. Each day, new, age-appropriate theatre skills are introduced to improve students’ singing, dancing, and acting. We’ll explore many Broadway show favorites. The camp culminates with a final performance for parents and guests to enjoy. Chris Martin, who has directed our drama camp performances the past three years, will lead the camp.
Amazing Race
Cost: $85.00

Join us this week for a race across camp! Children will work in small groups to conquer challenges that concentrate on team work, leadership, communication, and personal growth. Campers will decode clues, find their way on a map, and complete physical and mental challenges to earn clues that will help them continue their journey across the ELS campus. Get ready for the best race of your summer!
June 27 - July 1
 Soccer Camp
Cost: $85.00

Children will get a kick out of this camp while learning the fundamentals of soccer, including dribbling, passing, kicking, and of course, scoring! Kevin Drury, the instructor, is a coach and referee in Haywood County schools. Pass, shoot, SCORE!!!
Wet and Wild
Cost: $90.00

Get ready to get wet and have fun. This week Nancy Jankowski, our Athletic Director, has a wild week of water games planned. The campers will be playing water balloon volleyball, water limbo, slip and slide tag, and water races, to name a few. This wet and wild week will end with the campers visiting Waynesville Recreational Center.
July 5 - July 8
 Crafts Explosion!

ELS Teacher, Kim Noel, will keep your child busy this week! Campers have the opportunity to enhance their creativity with a variety of mediums. You will take home a special creation every day. Come and discover the artist within you!
 Basketball Camp (Closed - Full)

Coach Swatzell will teach campers the fundamentals of basketball, including shooting, passing, ball handling, and defense, plus give them a chance for more game experience. Come and have fun while you sharpen your skills!
July 11 - July 15
 Survivor Camp

Are you a Survivor? This week children will learn teamwork, problem solving, communication, and build self-esteem through various challenges. Activities include: physical and mental challenges, building your own shelter, and creating a tribal outfit, to name a few. If you’re up for a challenge, come join the tribe!
 Cooking With Kids (Closed - Full)

Your young chef will enjoy learning all about good nutrition in this Cooking with Kids class. Students will compile a recipe book with instructor Chris Smith, an ELS teacher, and spend each day creating a delicious culinary dish. The week will end with a visit to Cici’s Pizza so the campers can create their ultimate pizza.
July 18 - July 22
 Tae Kwon Do (Closed - Full)

Asheville Sun Soo Traditional Tae Kwon Do Instructor Tony Morris, a 4th degree black belt for more than 20 years, heads up this exciting camp. Campers will learn an array of skills with a special emphasis placed on the core values of respect, integrity, and self-control.
 Hi-Touch-High-Tech Science Camp

A Scientist will engage the children in fun, non-stop, hands-on learning. Some of the programs that the camp will cover are: Gold Rush, Soak it Up, Bubble Blast, On One Condition, and much more science fun!!
July 25 - July 29
 Komputer Kamp for Kids (Closed - Full)

Are you a computer whiz? Do you like taking pictures? Then this is the camp for you! This week the campers will make their own digital scrapbook, create, produce, and edit their own movie, and design their own website. At the end of the week we will have a film festival for campers and parents to enjoy.
 Adventures in Asheville (Closed - Full)

This will be a non-stop, fun-filled week of field trips around the Asheville area. Children will enjoy field trips to Fun Depot, the Nature Center, and Health Adventure. They will also go bowling, catch a movie, and enjoy pizza all in one week. Come join this busy week of fun!
August 1 - August 5
Musical Journey (Closed - Full)

Join us in a fun, musical journey that will highlight many different areas of music. Marie Cole, cellist and music instructor for over ten years, will lead the campers in various exciting musical activities. This will include music theory games, instrument exploration, a little music history, singing, and movement activities. Marie also has some fun musical surprises in store for the campers. If you like music and are up for some fun, dance on in!
 Outdoor Adventure (Closed - Full)

Off we go to enjoy the great outdoors! This exciting week offers a little bit of everything; Campers will search for gems at Emerald Village, learn about farm life at historic Johnson farms, and visit the Oconaluftee Indian Village. They will also explore the Forbidden Caverns and take a boat trip across Lake Lure. Your child will not want to miss all the adventures we have planned.
August 8 - August 12
 Gymnastics
Cost: $100.00

Phoenix gymnastics will provide hands-on training by instructors from the gym. This camp will focus on learning the basic skills of gymnastics: handstands, tumbling, rolls, cartwheels, and floor skills. Your child will love this high energy camp.
Field Trip Extravaganza! (Closed - Full)

This week the children will play a round of mini golf, go for a swim at Waynesville Recreational Center, and jump for joy at Mountain Play Lodge. They will challenge their skating skills at Tar Wheels Skating and explore the fun and games at Chuck E. Cheese. Come join this week of non-stop fun!
Emmanuel Under The Lights - Drama Camp For Rising 6th thru 12th grade
July 25 - August 5

Camp only - No extended day available; lunch included
 Emmanuel Lutheran will produce our version of “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. This is the opportunity for your young actor or actress to star in a live performance!
Director Chris Martin has directed the last four shows for ELS including: “High School Musical,” “Willy Wonka,” “Dear Edwina,” and, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” as well as musical productions at Asheville Community Theatre and Jones Elementary.
Chris will take the students from auditions all the way through the actual performance. Singing, dancing, acting, and stage development are skills that will be developed over this intense, but fun-filled, two-week camp.
Auditions for this production will be May 31 and June 2 from 6-8 p.m. in the Emmanuel Lutheran School gymnasium.
Performances will take place Saturday, August 6 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 7 at 2 p.m. at the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre (20 Commerce Street, Asheville, NC 28801) Please call 281-8182 extension 133 for more information.
